Frequent Terms
Below is a brief list of terms parents new to SJB (and sometimes, new to the area) have had questions about. It is far from exhaustive, however, so feel free to reach out if you have questions or any additions to make!
Auction: Every other year SJB holds a large gala to support the school. Includes a silent auction, dinner, dessert auction, and live auction. When registering, indicate who you would like to sit with at your dinner table.
Back to School Open House: Prior to the first day of school, the building is opened up so parents and children can visit their new classrooms, meet their teachers, and drop off school supplies in a casual atmosphere. EduKits will be available for those who pre-ordered supplies. A letter will be mailed with further details.
Book Fair: Scholastic Books fairs happen twice a year and are a significant source of funds for teachers and the library to acquire new books. A "mini fair" happens in the fall. A larger fair occurs during Catholic Schools Week. Students typically visit the fair with their class early in the week and create a "wish list." Parents can send in money so the students can purchase some of those titles when the class returns later in the week. The Fair is also open after Mass and after school this week.
Catholic Schools Week: A weeklong celebration highlighting Catholic Schools. SJB holds an Open House after Sunday morning Mass for prospective families to tour the campus and also gives returning families a chance to register for the upcoming school year. Other special events happen at school this week including a Scholastic Book Fair and Cookie Delivery to local businesses.
Communication methods: The Principal sends an informative email at the end of each week. She also has a Monday message on Sycamore. Teachers may use email, text, Sycamore, blogs, facebook, remind, or paper copies so it's important to find out where to look from each. Home & School uses this weebly. The school website is filled with information, but is not usually as up-to-date. A new school/parish website is currently being developed.
Drop off: morning parent drop off is along the road on the West side of the building. Students play in the lower parking lot until the bell rings, so no cars are allowed in the lot. Mornings of heavy rain or frigid temperatures--when no students are outside--cars pull into the lot and drop off at the door. Preschool drop off is at the doors on the North side of the building. Ring bell for entry. Students who arrive after the bell should get buzzed in through the front entrance (East side) and sign in at the office before going to class.
FACTS: Online payment system. Tuition, most fieldtrip and other fees, lunch, and childcare expenses all run through FACTS.
Fish Fry: The parish hosts a Friday night fish fry during Lent. Profits for each week are shared with those groups who volunteer to work the shifts, which includes school 5th--8th graders. Students and their families volunteer to fill positions and bake desserts for those Fridays. More details can be found here.
Grandparents Day: Grandparents (or other special people in the students' lives) are invited to attend Mass with the students.
Home & School: strives to promote effective communication and cooperation between parents and educators. Oversees activities at SJB that enhance the Catholic School experience for students, parents, and staff. Budget is funded by dues paid by each family.
Jaguar Jog: 5k Fun Run, 2 Mile Walk, Cub Crawl.
Mass days: Most Tuesday mornings an all-school Mass is held. No jeans or shorts allowed. Parents and community members are welcome to attend.
Pick up: after school pick up is on the West side of the school. Cars park in the lower lot. Students are expected to wait behind the orange cones until a parent retrieves them, but cars exiting the lot do so with extreme caution. Students are not allowed to play on the playset after dismissal because of the close proximity to the cars. Preschoolers exit the building on the North side of the building.
Road America: SJB runs a concession stand at this nearby racetrack. Families are required to work two, four hour shifts each summer.
School Calendar: 2018-2019 School Calendar
School Pictures: Traditional school pictures are taken during regular school hours every fall. Orders can be placed online or via paper form. All students will have their picture taken regardless of order status. Pictures are again taken in the spring and proofs sent home. You may choose to keep and pay for those pictures, or simply return them to school.
Scrip: gift cards sold through this special program provide rebates to the school and to the purchaser.
Sycamore: Manages behind the scenes information for the school.
Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week: Typically the first week in May. Teachers/Staff are celebrated during this weeklong event with a variety of activities and gifts to show student and parent appreciation.
